Why do a lot of people want to change their skin colour and run after fairness creams?

Fairness creams are in no doubts are hot selling items!!Unfortunately most people want to look the fairest. They do try anything to be fair especially girls. Why is the general feeling that the dark skin is something which is not easily accepted?
