In the history of the world, has any nation ever taxed itself into prosperity?

It's probably happened more often than people have taken a tax cut in the middle of Category 5 economic disaster and rushed right out to spend it. "Wow, I have no job and my 401K is gone. But the GOP has given me $300, so let's go buy that big screen TV!"
